How this page works

Why did the stock market move today?

This page lists each sharp move in S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures as it happens, with the headlines, economic data and earnings reports from around that time. When the news shows a clear reason, the page says so. When it doesn't, the page says that instead of guessing.

What counts as a sharp move?

A rise or fall in S&P 500 futures of at least 0.5% in 30 minutes or 0.8% in two hours, or in Nasdaq 100 futures of at least 0.8% in 30 minutes or 1.25% in two hours. A gap of those sizes when trading reopens counts too. That has worked out to about two moves a week.

Does this include moves outside regular trading hours?

Yes. Index futures trade nearly around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening, so the page also catches moves overnight and on Sunday evening, when the stock market itself is closed.

How is the explanation written?

An AI model reads the headlines, economic releases and earnings reports from around the move and writes one sentence, using only what those items say. Headlines often reach us a few minutes after the move, so each explanation is reviewed 5 and 15 minutes later.

For information only, not investment advice. An explanation describes the news around a move. It can't prove what caused it.
