13F filers whose registered names identify them as family offices. Many single-family offices use neutral names (Cascade, Duquesne, MSD) — those appear in the profiled list above instead.
What is a family office?
A family office is a private firm that manages one wealthy family's money — investments, taxes, philanthropy and estate planning. Single-family offices serve one family (Cascade Investment for Bill Gates, MSD Partners for Michael Dell); multi-family offices serve several.
How do we know what they own? Any manager with over $100M in US-listed equities must file a 13F each quarter listing its long positions. Separately, anyone owning 10% or more of a company, or sitting on its board, reports trades on Form 4 within two business days. Some offices exempted themselves from registration after 2011 and hold concentrated stakes, so their Form 4 filings tell more than a 13F would.
Limits. 13Fs lag the quarter end by up to 45 days and omit cash, bonds, private companies, foreign stocks and short positions. Treat this as a record of disclosed holdings, not a live portfolio.
