Quick-reference for reading the values below. Indicators combine to confirm a view — no single one is a trade signal on its own.
- SMA 20 / 50 / 200 — price above = uptrend, below = downtrend. SMA 50 crossing SMA 200 is the golden/death cross.
- EMA 12 / 26 — faster-reacting averages; 12 above 26 is short-term bullish.
- MACD — bullish when MACD > signal (green badge), bearish when below. Divergence from price often precedes reversals.
- ADX (14) — trend strength regardless of direction. <20 range, 20–25 weak trend, 25–50 trend, >50 strong trend.
- +DI / −DI — +DI > −DI favors bulls; the reverse favors bears. Read alongside ADX.
- RSI (14) — <30 oversold, >70 overbought. 40–60 is neutral; trending names can stay extreme.
- Stochastic %K / %D — <20 oversold, >80 overbought. %K crossing %D is an early momentum signal.
- Williams %R — inverted scale: <−80 oversold, >−20 overbought.
Oscillators work best in range-bound markets; in strong trends they give premature reversal signals.
- Bollinger Bands — price at upper band = overbought, lower = oversold. Narrow bands (squeeze) often precede expansion.
- OBV — cumulative volume; rising OBV confirms uptrend, falling OBV confirms downtrend. Divergence from price is a warning.
- Vol SMA 20 / Vol ROC — today's volume vs. 20-day average. Positive ROC with price move = conviction.
- ATR / True Range — average daily $ move; sizing and stop-loss reference.
- HV 20 / 30 / 60 — realized (historical) volatility. Compare to IV on the options cards: IV > HV = rich premium.
Confluence matters: trend + momentum + volume agreeing carries far more weight than any single indicator. For how these feed the spread scanner score, see the algorithm docs →

Data Summary
FNDA (Schwab Fundamental U.S. Small Company ETF) — Comprehensive Analysis
Executive Summary
Overall Assessment: NEUTRAL (Confidence: 6/10)
FNDA is a diversified, passively managed small-cap value ETF holding 933 positions with a very low concentration (top 10 = 5.1%). The fund trades near its 20-day moving average ($35.64) at $35.62, reflecting a balanced technical posture, but faces significant headwinds from sustained outflows totaling −$1.4B over the latest month and −17.3% of assets over 12 months. The portfolio fundamentals show stress: holdings trade at a +16.5% premium to fair value with a weighted P/E of 55.8, while technical indicators reveal active downward pressure (−DI: 32.74 vs +DI: 17.39, MACD histogram: −0.40, OBV deeply negative at −13.6M).
Key Drivers: Small-cap value sector positioning, multi-factor screening, low-cost structure (0.25% ER). Primary Risks: Fund outflows, elevated valuation, bearish momentum, negative OBV, weak options market interest.
Investment Thesis: FNDA's structural appeal (cheap fees, diversification) is offset by deteriorating fund flows, overvalued holdings, and bearish technical signals. Investors are rotating out of small-cap value into other strategies. Recovery depends on small-cap mean reversion and reversal of outflow pressure.
Recent News Sentiment Impact: Two positive Zacks evaluations (most recent 2026-10-09 and 2026-08-31) provide mild tailwind, suggesting analyst interest in the small-cap value category. However, these are general "should this be on your radar?" pieces with no specific catalysts tied to FNDA's tactical positioning. The positive sentiment does not align with the underlying technical deterioration and fund flow exodus.
Technical Analysis
Trend Direction
| Timeframe | Assessment | Rationale | |---|---|---| | Short-term (1–4 weeks) | BEARISH | Price at $35.62 is aligned with SMA 20 ($35.64) but below SMA 50 ($36.78) by 3.2%, signaling weakness. MACD is bearish (−0.32 vs signal +0.08, histogram −0.40). | | Medium-term (1–3 months) | BEARISH | SMA 50 ($36.78) sits above SMA 200 ($35.35), but the 50-day is sloping downward relative to recent price action. RSI at 43.67 is sliding from neutral toward oversold territory. | | Long-term (3–12 months) | MIXED | SMA 200 ($35.35) is only 0.8% below current price, indicating the fund has not violated long-term support. However, persistent outflows and valuation compression could test this level. |
Support/Resistance Levels
| Level | Price | Significance | |---|---|---| | Resistance (Near-term) | $36.26 | Bollinger Bands upper band; coincides with SMA 50. Breaking above would signal a reversal of medium-term weakness. Volume needed to overcome. | | Support (Immediate) | $35.35 | SMA 200; psychological round level. Loss of this level would trigger technical breakdown toward $34.50–$35.00 range. | | Support (Secondary) | $35.03 | Bollinger Bands lower band; next technical floor if $35.35 fails. | | Resistance (Medium-term) | $37.00+ | Psychological barrier; would require sustained positive catalysts (inflow reversal, sector rotation). |
Momentum Signals
RSI (14): 43.67 — NEUTRAL with downside bias
- Reading is in the neutral zone (30–70) but trending lower, not yet oversold (<30). The decline from higher levels suggests weakening internal momentum.
- Risk: Further decay could push toward oversold (<30) on next down leg, potentially triggering capitulation or algorithmic buying.
MACD: −0.32 (line) vs +0.08 (signal), Histogram: −0.40 — BEARISH DIVERGENCE
- MACD line is below the signal line and the histogram is negative, confirming downward momentum.
- The 12-EMA ($35.62) is slightly above the 26-EMA ($35.94), but this crossover is recent/shallow, suggesting the bearish trend may be young.
- Interpretation: Sell signal in effect; no bullish crossover signal yet.
Bollinger Bands: Width 3.45 — NEUTRAL (not in squeeze or extreme breakout)
- Upper band at $36.26, middle at $35.64, lower at $35.03.
- Price at $35.62 is just below the middle, indicating no overbought condition.
- Band width of 3.45 is moderate—neither compressed (suggesting a breakout is building) nor expanded (suggesting volatility climax).
- No mean-reversion pressure yet, but price is positioned for downside if support fails.
Volume Analysis
Volume SMA 20: 2,311,299 shares
- Volume Rate of Change: +9.72% — Slightly elevated, suggesting recent volume above the 20-day average.
- Interpretation: Some institutional activity, but not explosive. Consistent with managed outflows rather than panic selling.
On-Balance Volume (OBV): −13,566,661 — CRITICAL RED FLAG
- Deeply negative and deteriorating, indicating that selling volume has consistently exceeded buying volume over the recent period.
- OBV divergence with price (price holding near SMA 20 but OBV collapsing) is a classic sign of distribution—smart money exiting.
- Risk Assessment: OBV weakness suggests the support at $35.35 and $35.64 may not hold if tested; followthrough selling is likely.
Institutional Interest Signal:
- The negative OBV, combined with −$1.4B monthly outflows, confirms that institutional investors (including the fund manager's rebalancing) are rotating capital away from FNDA holdings.
- This is not short-term panic; it's systematic redemption pressure.

Recent Headlines Summary
Positive Mentions (2 recent articles):
-
"Is Schwab Fundamental U.S. Small Company ETF (FNDA) a Strong ETF Right Now?" (Zacks, 2026-10-09) — POSITIVE
- Generic "should this be on your radar?" format; no specific catalyst or catalyst date mentioned.
- Likely a routine category review suggesting FNDA remains a reasonable vehicle for small-cap value exposure.
-
"Should Schwab Fundamental U.S. Small Company ETF (FNDA) Be on Your Investing Radar?" (Zacks, 2026-08-31) — POSITIVE
- Similar framing; separated by 1+ month from the latest piece, suggesting recurring analyst interest.

- Comparable small-cap value ETF articles (IWN, VBR) dated 2026-10-09 and 2026-10-07, indicating category-wide analyst focus.
- Older news items (Billionaire investor/RKT stake boost, GEO earnings) are not recent and not directly related to FNDA. These appear to reflect historical holdings mentions or sector tangents.
Sentiment Assessment
Aggregate News Sentiment: CAUTIOUSLY POSITIVE (but weak)
- The two recent Zacks articles are framed positively ("Strong ETF Right Now," "Be on Your Radar"), but they are generic category reviews, not FNDA-specific catalysts.
- No breaking news, no tactical catalyst dates, no fund-specific announcements (e.g., manager change, fee reduction, new strategy launch).
- Positive sentiment is soft—it reflects analyst interest in small-cap value as a category, not bullish conviction on FNDA's near-term performance.

IV(put wing) − IV(ATM), in vol pointsHow much the OTM put trades above (or below) the at-the-money strike. Measures the height of the put-side tail relative to ATM — i.e. how expensive crash insurance is on this name.
- Positive (typical) — wing IV > ATM IV. Standard equity put skew: portfolios bid up crash protection, so OTM puts trade richer than ATM.
- Near zero or negative (unusual) — wing IV ≤ ATM IV. Flat or inverted put side. Common when there's no fear demand, in tightly mean-reverting names, or right after an earnings catalyst clears.
- Percentile vs own 3-yr history: high = wings rich (good time to sell wing premium); low = wings cheap (good time to buy protection).
- Not directional — high or low wings don't predict up or down moves. It's a price tag on tail insurance, not a forecast.
IV(call wing) − IV(put wing), equal delta on each sideWhich side of the smile is the market paying up for? Measures the tilt of the surface — call skew vs put skew at matched deltas.
- Negative (typical) — puts richer than calls. Standard equity behavior: hedging demand makes puts carry a premium. Most large-caps sit in the −1 to −5 vol-point range.
- Strongly negative (< −5 pts) — heavy downside hedging, elevated fear, or an upcoming catalyst (earnings, FDA, macro event). Worth flagging.
- Positive — calls richer than puts. Unusual for equities; signals bullish momentum, short-squeeze positioning, or takeover/M&A speculation.
- Near zero — symmetric surface. Market sees roughly equal up/down risk. Rare for large-caps; more common in commodities and FX.
Wing-vs-ATM tells you how expensive the tails are. Risk Reversal tells you which side is favored. Combined:
- High wing percentile + deeply negative RR → strong put bid; stress or major event priced in. Owning protection costs a premium; selling put premium is dangerous.
- Low wing percentile + near-zero RR → complacency; insurance cheap and balanced. Good environment to add cheap downside hedges.
- Positive RR + elevated wings → call-side fear-of-missing-out; common in squeeze setups. Upside calls expensive, downside puts not bid.
Percentile is the rank of today's reading within ~3 years of this symbol's own history. High percentile = wings are rich relative to history; not a directional signal. Skew is read off the chain in real time, not from CBOE SKEW.

- Float % — free float / shares outstanding. <50% = tightly held, more prone to squeezes.
- SI % of Float < 5% — typical, no particular signal.
- 5–15% — elevated; watch for catalysts (earnings, guidance, macro).
- 15–30% — heavily shorted; tight-float names in this range have produced notable squeezes historically.
- >30% — extreme; borrow is likely expensive and squeeze risk is material.
- Days to Cover > 5 combined with high SI% amplifies squeeze potential.
- Trend matters more than level. Rapidly rising short interest often precedes negative catalysts or heavy hedging.
- A sudden drop in SI after a rally may indicate a squeeze in progress.
Short interest is reported mid-month and end-of-month; short volume is daily.
